Teenage Gynaecology

Adolescent Gynaecology Melbourne

You’re not too young to see a gynaecologist.

As a young person, you should not avoid seeking care for all aspects of your health. Girls can experience a wide range of symptoms and discomfort associated with changes in their bodies from the commencement of puberty.

Periods, hormones, pelvic pain, mood changes, and more can all be reasons to consider making an appointment.

Dr Prue understands many girls are anxious about seeing a gynaecologist.

Speaking with a healthcare professional is a great thing to do.

You’ll get to ask any of the questions you have, and we can discuss all of the options available to you. This does not mean you need a physical examination, often we will discuss your symptoms, how they are impacting your life and then talk about the next steps. What’s really important to know is, nothing happens if you don’t want it to.

Let’s Talk Teens and IUDs

Teenage Girls Melbourne Gynaecology

If you’ve scrolled TikTok to get information about IUDs, you might have seen a mix of information, and tbh - not all of it is accurate.

For some girls, an IUD, often called Mirena or Kyleena is an excellent choice to help with pelvic pain, excessive bleeding, endo, and lots of other concerns.

But - it’s true, IUD insertion is probably not on your list of fun things to do. For this reason, Dr Prue encourages all teens to elect to have a general anaesthetic (often called a twilight sedation). While the procedure is still quick and simple, it will be pain-free and an easier experience for you, you’ll wake up and it will all be over, you get to eat a sandwich, have a drink and head home with your trusted adult.

Teenagers and the Pill

The ‘Pill” is the common name that refers to many brands of contraceptive pill.

For many years, women have taken the pill to help manage their lifestyle and prevent pregnancies. But, that’s only one reason your doctor might suggest one of the many pills available.

Here’s a list of other reasons your doctor may discuss the pill as an option for you.

Lighter and More Regular Periods: The pill can help regulate menstrual cycles, leading to lighter and more predictable periods.

Reduced Period Pain: the Pill can reduce menstrual cramps and pain.

Skipping Periods: You can discuss with your doctor how to take the pill to avoid having periods altogether, some girls may need this to help manage activities they enjoy.

Improved Acne: The pill can help improve acne, as it reduces the levels of hormones that contribute to oil production.

Reduced Risk of Certain Cancers:

  • Endometrial Cancer: Studies show that using the pill can reduce the risk of endometrial (uterine lining) cancer.

  • Ovarian Cancer: The pill can also lower the risk of ovarian cancer.

  • Colon Cancer: Some research suggests a reduced risk of colorectal cancer with pill use.

  • Other Conditions:

    • Endometriosis: The pill can help manage symptoms of endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus.

    • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): The pill can help regulate periods and manage symptoms of PCOS.

    • Perimenopause: The pill can help manage some symptoms of perimenopause, the time when the body makes the natural transition to menopause, such as hot flashes.
